Location and History of Hotel Teatropace33
Certainly one of the most suggestive locations in the Historical Centre of Rome the Teatro Pace is a delicious hotel found nestled between the left bank of the Tiber and Piazza Navona Square Art and culture are the dishes of the day and in the immediate environs of the hotel you can taste a Bernini sculpture or Borromini building on just about every piazza. Opened in May 2004 the Teatro Pace is a sublime 3 star hotel that in the period of Pope Re, was the official residence of one of the Vatican’s most important Cardinals.

Constructed in the early part of the 17th century, the building is a fine example of Baroque architecture. As a listed building the teatropace is part of the national heritage and protected by the arts council – it is also part of the Roman Patrimony. Located in a quiet side street behind Corso Vittorio the Teatro Pace blends in well with the surrounding buildings, its’ facade is coloured in traditional orange and red colours mirroring the Roman sunset. The hotel entrance is small and understated, so much so, that it could easily be mistaken for a private residence... directly opposite the entrance you can find the Theatre of Pace a 17th century building from which the present day hotel derives its’ name, The Theatre of Peace featured open-air productions by famous playwrights like Goldoni and was the stage for drama, satire, opera and comedy. The surrounding streets and Piazza Navona Square are bustling with life and at the end of the street a small market takes place every day (except Sunday) the surrounding shops and boutiques are a mixture of artisans, craftsmen and small shopkeepers. Only in this area of Rome can you find such a wonderful blend of tourists mingling freely with both “rich” and normal Romans. All living side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder...

This latter phenomenon is becoming a trend with the old houses in the historical centre of Rome, once almost exclusively inhabited by the working classes, being renovated and restructured, then sold off to Rich Romans and Foreigners. The end result is that you have a wonderful array of shops and restaurants to choose from – elegant and expensive restaurants and cheap pizzerias and trattorias, food shops and fashion outlets, tourists and traders, butchers and barbers.... all live with one another in perfect harmony in the same scenario that blossomed a rivalry between Borromini and Bernini and a period of artistic genius the likes of which Rome has not seen since. It’s impossible to list all of the art treasures located around the hotel, suffice to mention Piazza Navona, the Fountain of Four Rivers by Bernini, The church of Saint Agnes in Agony by Borromini , Bramante’s Cloister, Saint Andrew of the Valley and Michelangelo’s Farnese Palace - the first ever piece of Renaissance architecture and now home to the French Embassy. Important Museums located only a stone’s throw away include Barracco museum featuring precious Egyptian relics and artefacts, Palazzo Braschi which is holds the Museum of Rome, Palazzo Altemps with its’ rich collection of classic statues and on the nearby River Tiber you have the Napoleonic Museum plus the Castle Saint Angelo.

The Hotel - value for money hotel accommodation near Navona Square
Upon entering the Hotel Teatro Pace one finds themselves in a minuscule hallway at the foot of an inspiring spiral stone staircase clearly from the Bernini school of architecture. Our reception staffs are suitably convivial and there’s an understated sophistication suited to a hotel of this status. Climbing the wide staircase (who could possibly have sacrificed such a work of art for the modern convenience of an elevator?) you arrive at the rooms.... 23 bed chambers, high ceilings and pleasantly decorated in classic style and almost all containing their original hardwood rafters on the ceiling with parquet flooring underfoot. From the bedrooms one can admire the views of rooftop Rome, adjacent houses with immaculately maintained balconies and terraces covered with flowers and greenery... look up and enjoy the site of Borromini’s church alternatively peer down at animated narrow streets bustling with life... you are in Rome so live it! Our hotel’s signature room is surely the Junior Suite which is located on the top floor the Junior Suite contains a Bedroom, Lounge and a 12 square metre Terrace with a view directly onto Borromini’s Church Saint Agnes in Agony.
